In Bloemfontein, on the campus of the University of the Free State, the statue of President Marthinus Theunis Steyn, old state president of what was then the Orange Free State, is under threat.
The student Representative council of the University has put in motion a desire to remove the statue, on the basis that it is a reminder of colonial rule, apartheid oppression, and institutionalised racism.
A series of public hearings has occurred, with the final decision finalised on the 9th of September 2018.
