About the NPC meme

The “weaponized autists” at 4Chan have done it again, because they can; a new meme suggesting that liberals are soulless idiots who can’t think for themselves has gone viral. The concept compares Democrats to “nonplayable characters,” or NPCs – the recurring characters in video games with repetitive lines and limited knowledge. Lack of an “inner voice” is a dead giveaway that someone may be an NPC.

NPC Wojak is a depiction of the MS Paint character Wojak with a blank stare and facial expression, named after non-player characters within video games. The character is meant to represent people who do not think for themselves or are incapable of having an internal monologue, bearing many similarities to the terms “basic” and “normie”.

On July 7th, 2016, an anonymous 4chan user submitted a thread titled “Are You an NPC?” to the /v/ (video games) board, which referred to people who “autonomously follow group thinks and social trends” as “NPCs” (shown below).

A non-player character (NPC), also known as a non-playable character, is any character in a game which is not controlled by a player. In video games, this usually means a character controlled by the computer via predetermined or responsive behavior, but not necessarily true artificial intelligence. In traditional tabletop role-playing games the term applies to characters controlled by the gamemaster or referee, rather than another player.

Internal monologue or self-talk refers to a person’s inner voice that provides a running monologue while we are awake. It reflects both conscious and unconscious beliefs. Self-talk influences how a person reacts to a situation—both how they feel and what they do. This is called the cognitive model. Self-talk can be positive, neutral or negative.

It is said in a study that 80% of people do not have an inner monologue.

Whitney Phillips, an assistant professor at Syracuse University whose research focuses on internet culture, published a report earlier this year on the effect of media coverage on bad actors and harmful memes. For “The Oxygen of Amplification,” Phillips uses interviews with a number of journalists about covering trolls and dangerous content to parse the delicate line between explaining a particular trend to your audience, which often provides necessary contextual insight, and bringing more attention to a possibly harmful movement that can increase hate speech and harassment online.

NPC also means Non-Participating Character in 3D role play community. It means basically the character is a fake entity meaning there is no real human controlling it

One of the Bundsmen sends me new Apus.

I like the Viking Apus, and Ragnar Apustaja. Don’t know what they’re actually called. The “am I disabled” one is funny, too.
