“‘Those witches did not exist. Communists do.”
You’ve heard Hollywood’s half of the story of the ‘Blacklist’. Of witch hunts and kangaroo courts.
Now hear the other half: The Red History of Hollywood
Albert Maltz – ‘What Shall We Ask of Writers?’
‘Darkness at Noon’
‘The God That Failed’
‘Hollywood Party’ by Kenneth Lloyd Billingsley
Correction, per the Paul Robeson/Solomon Mikoels murder story: Paul Robeson was warned not by a band member but a much more prominent figure: Author Itzak Feffer. It was he who was later murdered after delivering the unheeded warning. Mikoels had been murdered prior to Robeson arriving, making his ignoring the warnings of Feffer all the more ridiculous. I think I mixed up the band members/murder timing with another story in one of the sources I drew from. Doesn’t change the substance of the story, but I just wanted to clarify. (This is what happens when you roll from bullet points and not a script) P.S. – In a spasm of tragic irony, Robeson and Feffer had been hosted by the Hollywood Communist Party previously, in 1943, for the explicit purpose of denying Soviet Antisemitism.
