First, what is a ‘Værnemager’
From Wikipedia, so take it with a grain of salt.
Værnemager is a term for a person or company who, during the Occupation (1940-1945), made money on the “Værnemagten” (Wehrmacht, in Danish – German military) or otherwise acted in the German interest.
The word “Værnemager” has since been used as a scolding of companies that, in other contexts, make money from wars or occupations.
The word “Værnemager” was coined by businessman and resistance man Erling Foss, co-founder of the Freedom Council (Frihedsrådet). In the spring of 1943, Foss had a (replacement) coffee meeting with his contact with the Ministry of Interior, Gunnar Seidenfaden, at the Grand Cafe in Copenhagen. They had tried to find a word that like “goulash baron” during World War I could denote those who made money from the Germans. Foss came up with the idea that you could regroup the words “VÆRNEmagt og moneyMAKER”. The name “protective order was thus created and could be launched shortly afterwards in the illegal magazine Frit Danmark.
In connection with the post-occupation legal dispute, the four so-called protective order laws were adopted:
The Penal Code Supplement, also known as the Traitors Act or Værnemagerlov I, which targeted informers, members of the SS and other genuine traitors. That law carries a minimum sentence of four years in prison.
Værnemagerlov II was aimed at “improperly cooperating with the Germans” and was supposed to catch the cases that would probably result in a prison sentence, but less than four years.
These two laws were under the control of the public prosecutors because of the possibility of imprisonment.
Værnemagerlov III allowed companies and individuals to be ordered to repay their German payments, in whole or in part.
Værnemagerlov IV allowed unreasonable profit margins to be included on German orders.
Forty-four people were convicted under Værnemagerlov I and 1,114 under Værnemagerlov II. 10,030 orders were issued under Værnemagerlov III and Værnemagerlov IV and 318 million kroner was to be repaid.
Public perceptions of collaborators
John Hickman identifies thirteen reasons why occupied populations might hold collaborators in contempt.
- Because they were perceived as
- scapegoats for defeat
- opportunistic
- benefiting from their own poor decisions as leaders before the occupation
- violating the norms of the traditional political order
- having no lasting political loyalties
- guilty of more than collaboration
- cowardly
- deceived by the occupier
- self-deceived
- cheaply bought
- diverting political focus
- representing powerlessness
- escaping their own guilt
This post is not about the Værnemager of the past, or the brave men fighting our Judeo-Slavic enemies and whether they were guilty of Værnemageri or not.
No, this is about the Værnemager of today, the treaters and collaborators from the local social welfare worker to the mainstream media and ofcause our politicians.
It’s clear, that if we compare today with the standard of the past. We would have even more treaters and collaborators to prosecute and we will not need bogus trials like the Nuremberg charade.
