In July 2021, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (NC) Police Department announced that child sexual assaults inside the city of Charlotte were up an astounding 93 percent, in cases where the victims are 15 years or younger.
Since taking office, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden has made it official policy, not to cooperate with U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), by not allowing MCSO deputies to inquire into any suspect’s immigration status, nor will the sheriff honor ICE detainers.
McFadden is up for reelection this year, but the race will actually be decided on May 17, the day of the Democratic primary. Including McFadden, there are three candidates vying for sheriff of Mecklenburg County, but no Republican candidates are running this year.
